Huberta FAQs

Q. When and where was Huberta first seen?

A. In 1928 in Northern Zululand.

Q.  How did they know it was the same hippo that they kept on seeing?

A.  Originally there were hippos in every watercourse from the Western Cape to Kwa-Zulu Natal, but by 1900 most were shot out by hunters and traders and there were no hippos south of St Lucia.

Q. What was the first name given to this hippo?

A. Billy

Q.  Where did the name Huberta come from?

A.  Some journalist must have found the first name uninspiring, so the name was changed to Hubert. That name stuck until her death. While skinning the carcass Capt. Shortridge discovered that "Hubert" was female and the name was changed to Huberta.
