Amathole Museum

The museum's sincere congratulations to Dr Manton Hirst who has managed to aquire the very important Xhosa bead collection collected by Professor Philip and Dr Iona Mayer during the late 1950's and early 1960's in the Peddie area.

The Mayers took the collection to Oxford, UK when they moved back there in the late 1970's.  After lengthy negotiations and with the financial assistance of the University of Fort Hare's Institute of Social and Economic Research (FHISER) in East London, Manton was able to get the collection donated to the Amathole Museum. 

The collection has been accessioned into the Anthropology collection and will be exhibited in due course.
